Langford Vets is excited to offer Orthopaedic Surgery Intern at our state-of-the-art Small Animal Referral Hospital.
As an Orthopaedic Surgery Intern, you will work predominantly Orthopaedic Surgery service, gaining hands-on experience and training in all aspects of small animal surgical care. You’ll be joining a dynamic and supportive team of experts, including 9 ECVS Diplomates, multiple residents, and a broad range of other specialists across our hospital.
What You'll Do:
- Work directly in clinical practice with the orthopaedic surgery team
- Receive structured training and mentorship from experienced specialists
- Take administrative and surgical assistant responsibility for our hip replacement programme
- Contribute to clinical teaching and collaborative research initiatives
- Participation in a first opinion out of hours emergency rota.
This position is ideal for someone seeking further development in orthopaedic surgery with the potential to progress into a residency position upon successful completion of the programme.

Job Purpose:
You will be involved in the care, management and investigation of patients presenting through the referral orthopaedic service. You will also be involved in assisting with the smooth running of the service. This will include admitting patients, scheduling imaging and sedating patients.
Normal working hours will be 8am to 5.30pm however this will vary depending on case load. You will be responsible for a revisit clinic.
Principal Accountabilities:-
The role will include the following duties
- Full involvement with the smooth running of the orthopaedic rotation
- Assistance with orthopaedic sedations (working and liaising with the sedation nurses and rotational intern)
- Where necessary performing anaesthesia for orthopaedic procedures
- Development of a revisit clinic (under the supervision of a senior clinician) – This will involve admitting, sedating and discharging patients
- Ensuring effective communication with referring vets and owners
- Assisting with any clinical trials and collating completed LOAD questionnaires (e.g. forceplate data collection)
- Responsible for contributing hip replacement cases to BVOA hip registry
- Assisting with admitting cases for surgery
- Discharging cases to owners
- Assisting with form filling and general organisation of the clinic
- Admission of emergency cases as necessary
- Surgical assistant - Preparing cases for surgery – e.g. draping and getting instruments out ready for the surgeon
- Filtering the advice calls, following up on cases where x-rays have not come through and redirecting calls to the right service (e.g. neurology)
- Active contribution to student assessment and feedback
- Collating and producing discharge instruction template letters and case reports for common clinical case presentations
- Producing and updating client information sheets for common orthopaedic conditions
- The role will involve some out of hours responsibilities (not more than 1:4) the frequency of which will vary over the year. This is unlikely to be a regular commitment but will be to cover business needs.
