Why is Dental Health Important?

In a recent survey of pets, it is estimated that around 70% of dogs have dental disease from the age of just three years old with only 20% of owners recognising their pet had poor dental health. Many pet owners assume, as the pet is eating well, there wouldn’t be any dental pain. However if faced with a choice of pain or going hungry they will continue eating.

Dental disease is one of the most common diseases in dogs and cats and is often preventable. As with humans, we now recognise that daily dental hygiene is the best way of keeping teeth and gums healthy. This can be carried out using a special pet toothbrush or soft bristled human toothbrush and pet toothpaste. You can also choose between a traditional toothbrush, or a finger brush, depending on your preference and your pets comfort level.

Make sure the toothbrush is the right size for your pet’s mouth and teeth. It is important not to use human toothpaste as this contains Fluoride, which if swallowed, is toxic to pets. Pet toothpaste comes in a variety of flavours that appeal to pets and medicated toothpaste is available from your veterinary practice for treatment of gum disease. Look for a toothpaste that contains enzymes that help break down plaque and tartar.

Signs of Dental Disease

Dental hygiene is just as important for dogs & cats as it is for humans, but it’s something that many owners overlook. Neglecting your pets’ teeth can lead to a variety of health problems, including tooth decay, gum disease, and even life-threatening infections.

Dental disease can appear quite suddenly, or progress over time and take months.
