Supply of Medicines
Our vets are only able to prescribe medicines to animals that are under the care of our veterinary practice. This means that your animal must have had a consultation/medication review with one of our veterinary surgeons typically within the previous 6 months to discuss use of the specified medication.
In situations where we have not seen your animal for more than 6 months, you will be required to make an appointment before medicines can be dispensed and will be invoiced for a consultation.
Parasite control and antimicrobials can only be prescribed following a physical examination of the patient. Parasite control can be prescribed for up to a 12mth supply.
The practice is unable to accept the return of any medicines once they have left our premises or issue a credit for them, we are however able to dispose of any unused medicines on your behalf. We, therefore, ask that you check that all medicines are correct before leaving the practice.
Written prescriptions
Written prescriptions are a legal document entitling the holder to legally purchase medication for animal use. The prescription must be filled out correctly and to the legal standard required by both the veterinary and pharmacy professions.
The purchase of human medications (including common over the counter medications) intended for use in animals is strictly prohibited without a valid written veterinary prescription.
The current fee for a written prescription is £27.00
Additional medications on the same prescription are £15.00
Once a prescription has been written it cannot be refunded as the fee charged is for the time taken and the professional responsibility to create the prescription.
We aim to provide written prescriptions within 48hrs of request and may, time permitting, be able to provide it at the time of appointment.
Prescriptions are valid for a legal maximum of 6 months. The duration of medications detailed on the prescription can vary according to the disease and/or medication. Although parasite control may be prescribed for up to 12mth duration, the medication must have been purchased within the 6mth validity of the prescription.
Online pharmacies may be able to accept an order for medication in advance of receiving the authorised paper copy of the written prescription, however they should not release medication prior to them receiving the original document. In urgent situations or if there are any queries, the pharmacist may contact us (the prescriber) directly to verify the prescription before dispensing the medication.
