We're looking for an HR Advisor - Employee Relations & Recruitment to join our friendly and busy HR team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in supporting managers across a diverse veterinary organisation, managing complex employee relations matters, and helping to attract and retain exceptional people.

This role offers a varied workload, significant autonomy, and the opportunity to work on a range of interesting people projects while contributing to the delivery of our people strategy.

About the Role

Reporting to the HR Director, you will provide expert advice and guidance across a broad range of employee relations matters, ensuring managers are supported to make fair, consistent and legally compliant decisions.

Alongside employee relations casework, you will support recruitment activity across the business, ensuring compliance with employment legislation and equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) principles.

Key Responsibilities

Employee Relations

  • Provide expert advice and coaching to managers on disciplinary, grievance, absence, capability, performance and probation matters.
  • Manage complex employee relations cases from start to finish.
  • Conduct and support workplace investigations.
  • Liaise with ACAS and external legal advisers where required.
  • Support managers in managing sensitive people issues, including reasonable adjustments and disability-related matters.
  • Identify and mitigate employee relations risks while promoting fair and consistent decision-making.
  • Draft formal correspondence, outcome letters and other HR documentation.

Recruitment

  • Advise managers on recruitment best practice and legally compliant recruitment processes.
  • Partner with managers on workforce planning and recruitment activities.
  • Ensure recruitment processes align with employment legislation, right to work requirements and EDI principles.

Wider HR Support

  • Contribute to HR projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Review and develop HR policies, procedures and guidance.
  • Deliver training and coaching to managers and employees.
  • Work collaboratively with the wider HR team to support the delivery of business objectives.

About You

We're looking for someone who is confident, pragmatic and approachable, with strong employee relations experience and a passion for providing excellent HR support.

You'll have:

  • Significant experience managing complex employee relations cases.
  • Strong knowledge of UK employment law and HR best practice.
  • Experience conducting workplace investigations.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.
  • The confidence to influence and challenge managers constructively.
  • Strong written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • The ability to manage a varied and demanding workload.
  • Experience advising on reasonable adjustments and Occupational Health recommendations.
  • CIPD Level 5 qualification (or equivalent experience).

Desirable:

  • Experience working with ACAS and external legal advisers.
  • Previous experience supporting recruitment and talent acquisition activities.

Job Purpose:

To provide specialist Employee Relations and HR support during a period of increased workload, with a particular focus on managing complex and sensitive employee relations matters. The postholder will work closely with managers to provide expert advice, ensure compliance with employment legislation and HR best practice, and support the delivery of fair, consistent and pragmatic people solutions.

In addition, the role will support key HR activities, including recruitment, providing advice and guidance to managers on fair, inclusive and legally compliant recruitment practices, in line with employment legislation, equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) principles, right to work requirements and company policies. The successful candidate may also become involved in a range of HR projects and initiatives, providing additional support to the wider HR team and helping to ensure the effective delivery of people priorities across the company.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

·      Provide expert employee relations advice, coaching and end-to-end case management support to managers across a wide range of matters, including disciplinary, grievance, absence, performance, capability and probation issues. Ensure advice is legally compliant, aligned with company policies, and supports effective decision-making and risk management.

·      Manage employee relations cases fairly, consistently and in line with best practice, supporting managers to understand the people implications of operational decisions. Escalate complex or high-risk matters where appropriate and build effective relationships with key stakeholders, including managers, Occupational Health providers, legal advisers and external partners.

·      Support the resolution of complex employee relations matters through effective liaison with ACAS and external legal advisers, ensuring appropriate documentation, risk management and legal compliance.

·      Support the early resolution of workplace issues through both informal and formal processes, promoting positive employee relations outcomes. Identify, assess and mitigate ER risks to ensure fair, consistent and commercially sound decision-making.

·      Collaborate with the wider HR team to continuously improve processes, share best practice and enhance people management capability across the business.

·      Support recruitment activity across the Company, providing advice and guidance to managers on recruitment processes and best practice, and assisting with the attraction, selection and appointment of candidates for specialist and business-critical roles.

·      Partner with managers to support workforce planning, recruitment and onboarding activities.

·      Ensure all recruitment activities are conducted in accordance with employment legislation, equality, diversity and inclusion principles, right to work requirements and internal policies and procedures.

Experience liaising with ACAS and legal advisors

Strong up-to-date knowledge of UK employment law, recruitment legislation and HR best practice, including equality, diversity and inclusion principles, right to work requirements and fair recruitment practices, with the ability to apply this in practice.

Proven experience conducting complex workplace investigations.

Excellent stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to influence, coach and challenge managers at all levels of the Company.

Strong written communication skills, with experience drafting formal correspondence, and outcome letters.

Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with professionalism, discretion and sound judgement.

Demonstrated ability to manage a high-volume and demanding caseload whilst maintaining attention to detail and meeting deadlines.

Experience advising on reasonable adjustments, disability-related matters and occupational health recommendations.

 Strong organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to work independently and quickly establish credibility within a busy HR function.

CIPD Level 5 qualification (or equivalent experience) in Human Resources.
