Langford Vets is a customer-focused group of veterinary service providers delivering a range of care, including small animal primary care and specialist led referral, farm, equine primary care and diagnostic laboratory services. At Langford Vets, our teams are striving to provide compassionate expertise for our patient and animal owners. We are dedicated to outstanding care and career long learning for our staff, undergraduates and post-graduate students, and external veterinary colleagues. We acknowledge that our operations have an effect on the environment and have identified the key environmental aspects that contribute to our environmental and carbon footprint:
- Consumption of electricity, gas, water, and other fuels
- Use of anaesthetic gases
- Waste generation
- Transport emissions
- Use of raw materials, including prescribed drugs and medicines
- Procured goods and services with their own environmental impact
Langford Vets is committed to reducing its environmental impact through a journey of continual improvement by working through the Investors in the Environment accreditation scheme. Our commitment to the environment has secured us a state-of-the-art practice facility that utilises innovative processes to provide a safe and healthy work environment for our employees, while guaranteeing quality service that will improve the health and wellbeing of our patients.
Our environmental commitment can be demonstrated in our established objectives and goals below:
- Commitment to net zero carbon emissions target by 2050 in alignment with Climate Change Act 2008 (2050 target amendment)
- Compliance with all applicable environmental regulations and public/customer expectations
- Monitoring our key resource usage and implementing conservation techniques to achieve our environmental targets
- Implement a waste/recycling policy and sustainable procurement policy
- Minimising unsustainable transport
- Take part in [1] One Health sustainability project with our staff
- Working with suppliers to ensure they acknowledge and decrease the environmental impact of their products and transportation
- Publishing and distribution of an annual organisational sustainability report
We will continue to improve our environmental management system by working to the Investors in the Environment (iiE) criteria, considering any changes in legislation, our organisation, and other factors. We will convey this policy to all our employees ensuring that they are provided with training to increase awareness of environmental matters.
Latifa Khenissi, Senior Anaesthetist, serves as our Lead Sustainability Champion. She will lead our sustainability collective and is responsible for the daily implementation of this policy.
The sustainability collective will be a staff led group that leads and oversees projects and ideas that would be beneficial to reduce the carbon footprint of Langford Vets, without affecting the clinical care level provided, the comfort of the employee or the client experience.
It will also ensure compliance with the sustainability module of the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme.
It will provide a framework to run projects in a manner that will not increase workload to the members of the sustainability collective. Each employee, student and client could submit a proposal through this framework.
The collective will assess the benefit of an idea/project in terms of environmental and financial sustainability. If all criteria are fulfilled the project would be then run over a set period. During this time, it will be monitored for potential unexpected problems. At the end of the trial period, its potential environmental and financial sustainability impact will be calculated and its impact on the patient level of care, ease of work of employee and experience of the client will be assessed. The overall benefit of the project will guide its endorsement or not in the daily running of the business.
The sustainability collective will:
- Audit annually the carbon footprint of Langford Vets’ activities (clinical and administrative)
- Promote and encourage change in mindset, working process and clinical practice for employees, students and clients toward improved environmental sustainability
- Ensure transparency regarding its activity to the employees, students and clients
- Continuously educate employees, students and clients regarding sustainable environment initiatives
- Develop and supervise projects in an innovative, scientific and evidence-based manner. Scientific publications will be encouraged and supported
Langford Vets will make this policy available, upon request, to interested parties, including members of the public, and make a copy available on the Langford Vets website.
