We have an exciting opportunity for a Veterinary Clinical Pathologist to join our laboratory team. The successful applicant will be expected to provide a full clinical pathology service including examination and interpretation of cytology samples and interpretation of laboratory results. The role holder will also be expected to work closely with laboratory staff to optimise, develop and expand testing services.

The Diagnostic Laboratories are an ECVCP (European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology) accredited training laboratory, with a close-knit team encompassing expertise in haematology, biochemistry, microbiology and molecular diagnostics. The laboratories run diagnostic testing for Langford Vets farm, equine and small animal first opinion practices as well as for external veterinary clients. A significant part of the caseload comes from the small animal referral hospital, which is located on the same site. As a Clinical Pathologist working in the Diagnostic Laboratories, you will be an integral part of this wider team of clinical experts, working together to deliver exceptional clinical care.

Applicants must hold a specialist qualification in veterinary clinical pathology (Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Clinical Pathology or the American College of Veterinary Pathology, or a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists), but board eligible clinical pathologists, and pathologists with other certifications and significant experience (at least 3 years) in diagnostic clinical pathology will also be considered. The successful candidate must also be a member of the RCVS, or eligible for RCVS membership with full working rights in the UK.

Contract: Full time (40 hours per week), part time and flexible working patterns will be considered. Permanent.

Reports to:                Director of the Diagnostic Laboratories

Job Purpose:

To provide an excellent clinical pathology service for our clients and assist in the development and expansion of diagnostic services. 

To communicate and liaise effectively with the Diagnostic Laboratories team to ensure results are released in line with the turnaround times.

To contribute to the delivery of CPD and/or training to visitors to the Diagnostic Laboratories as required. 

Principal Accountabilities:

·         To provide excellent clinical pathology service to customers. Incorporating examination and interpretation of cytological samples and interpretation and release of haematologic, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology and molecular diagnostic results.

·         To participate in the quality control/assurance, expansion and refinement of the of diagnostic services.

·         To provide advice to both internal and external veterinary surgeons when required.

·         To practice clinical pathology to the standards expected by the RCVS.

·         To communicate and liaise effectively with the Diagnostic Laboratory team to ensure services are delivered to the highest standard.

·         To attend medicine rounds, to communicate with other clinicians and nurses and to ensure that excellent service is provided to support the Langford Vets caseload.

·         To support growth and development of the clinical pathology diagnostic service through involvement in marketing initiatives undertaken by Langford Vets.

·         To follow all Langford Vets’ protocols and policies.

·         To take part in and/or support clinical research projects within Langford Vets and when appropriate with University of Bristol personnel.

·         To contribute to the delivery of undergraduate teaching and to the assessment and delivery of feedback to both undergraduate and postgraduate students when on clinical pathology rotations and extramural studies (EMS), when applicable.

·         To provide mentorship to undergraduate and post graduate students.

·         To undertake relevant training as requested to expand services offered within Langford Vets

·         To proactively identify and act upon opportunities for business improvement. Openly identify and discuss problems in order to implement and sustain improvements that increase the value we deliver to our clients, employees, and students.

·         To comply with health and safety regulations within the Diagnostic Laboratories, ensuring a safe working environment, promoting a culture of safety, and promptly reporting any safety concerns or incidents.

MRCVS
