Due to the growth of our thriving small animal, first opinion RCVS General Practice accredited practice we are currently recruiting a Student Veterinary Nurse to join our dedicated and enthusiastic team which operates a high standard of nursing care.

We have excellent facilities and also benefit from being situated next to the referral hospital, ensuring excellent access for our clients. The First opinion and referral services collaborate as a team for complete patient support, ensuring the highest standard of patient care.

The post is to support the smooth operation of the clinical activities within the LVP whilst undergoing the relevant training to become a qualified veterinary nurse. Duties will include maintaining practice clinical environment, facilitating smooth running of the practice, inpatient care, anaesthesia, radiography, laboratory work, nursing clinics and pharmacy/reception duties under the supervision of an RVN or veterinary surgeon.

37.5 hours a week including day release to college, with up to 1 in 3 weekends (currently 1 in 5 Saturdays)

Experience and Qualifications

Our ideal applicant will be reliable with a willingness to learn and to be able to work within a team. Previous experience in a veterinary environment is essential.

·    Five GCSEs at grade C and above or level 9 – 4, which must include English language, maths and a science subject.

OR

·   An animal nursing assistant (ANA) or veterinary care assistant (VCA) qualification, along with functional skills level two in application of number and communication.

The salary for this position will be in line with the National Apprenticeship scheme £8 per hour for the first year and National Living Wage £10.85 to £12.71 for the second year (depending on age)

Job purpose

Reports To:             Head Veterinary Nurse

Job Purpose:

The post is to support the smooth operation of the clinical activities within the LVP whilst undergoing the relevant training to become a qualified veterinary nurse.

Duties will include maintaining practice clinical environment, facilitating smooth running of the practice, inpatient care, anaesthesia, radiography, laboratory work, nursing clinics and pharmacy/reception duties under the supervision of an RVN or veterinary surgeon.


Principal Accountabilities:

  1. Assist veterinary surgeons with clinical procedures
  2. Under the supervision of the vet or qualified VN, carry out nursing duties such as monitoring anaesthesia, assisting with medical & surgical procedures, assisting with consultations, patient handling and restraint, taking blood samples, placing intravenous catheters, placing bandages, cleaning wounds and removing stitches
  3. Maintain the practice’s clinical environment to include infection control. Assist in the smooth running of the practice to ensure high standards in efficiency and patient care are supported and maintained.
  4. Proper restraining and positioning of patients requiring X-rays, as well as taking radiographs when instructed by a veterinary surgeon
  5. Dispense and administer (under the direct supervision of a veterinary surgeon) medication to animals, maintain accurate stock control and following all protocols relating to drug holding, dispensing and handling and provide clear and accurate instructions to clients when dispensing medications
  6. Maintain accurate patient records with regards to all clinical notes, treatment, diagnoses, client communication and client /patient information
  7. Ensure that all procedures and consumables are accurately entered onto the patients’ records, to always keep the invoice up to date during their stay with Langford Vets, along with maintaining correct stock levels within the practice.
  8. Support undergraduate students on their clinical rotations.
  9. Participate on a nurse rota for 37.5 hours per week; working shifts between the hours of 8.00am to 7.30pm Monday – Sunday, including up to 1:3 weekend days.

  11. Communicate in an effective and pleasant manner with clients and colleague
  12. Responsible for keeping themselves and others safe, reporting accidents, near misses and hazards and adhering to health and safety requirements and policies as required by the business/their line manager
  13. Proactively identify and act upon opportunities for business improvement.  Openly identify and discuss problems in order to implement and sustain improvements that increase the value we deliver to our, clients, employees, and students.
  14. Carry out all other reasonable duties as requested by the practice’s management team.
  15. Attend college on a weekly basis or as desired by the college in agreement with Langford Vets to study for the Diploma in Veterinary Nursing level 3.  To be prepared to study in own time to achieve this qualification.
  16. Complete associated study, assignments and skill log for the qualification.
