Langford Vets expands its ophthalmology service
Langford Vets is currently undergoing an exciting period of expansion and investment that combines Specialist expertise and state of the art facilities for the investigation, research and treatment of equine and companion animal eye disease.

Further to the news of Claudia Hartley joining the Company earlier this year, the team has now expanded to include a second European Specialist in Veterinary Ophthalmology making Langford Vets the Specialist Ophthalmology Centre of the South West. With 30 years combined experience in ophthalmology, David Donaldson and Claudia will be providing the ophthalmology service within both the Small Animal Referral Hospital and the Equine Centre.

David brings with him a wealth of experience and whilst most of his time has been focused on ocular disease in domestic species, he has also been involved in the management of ocular disease in a wide spectrum of species. David’s current interests include equine corneal disease and canine gonioimplant surgery.

The ophthalmology team also includes Audrey Chanoit, a Teaching Fellow in Veterinary Ophthalmology,  Serena Maini, a resident in ophthalmology, and a dedicated ophthalmology nurse, Kelly Shackleton.

Our on-site facilities include a dedicated ophthalmic examination room, hospital and staffing facilities for intensive 24 hours, seven days a week care, electroretinography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and a surgical suite with an operating microscope, phacoemulsification and vitrectomy machines, and dedicated microsurgical instrumentation. The Equine Centre also benefits from on-site standing surgery facilities as well as a general anaesthesia theatre suite.

Microsurgical procedures are facilitated by neuromuscular blockade which is provided by a team of specialist anaesthetists. The ophthalmology service works closely with the Small Animal Referral Hospital and Equine Centre team of Specialists in anaesthesia, emergency and critical care, cardiology, diagnostic imaging, dermatology, internal medicine, oncology, neurology, orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery, to provide an exceptional standard of care and the best possible outcome for patients.
