Small Animal Practice - Pet of the Month
Maddie's Story
Maddie Hansford has been chosen for our pet of the month. If you feel your pet deserves a spot in the limelight then please contact our RVN, Sam Brown who would be glad to hear of any.
Day One - Maddie brought into clinic
Maddie was presented at the Small Animal Practice, she was an entire 8yr old bitch. Her owners reported she had been off her food for 2 days and felt her abdomen was bloated. She had been retching the day before and was clearly very depressed. On examination we noted her abdomen was distended and taught.
She was admitted for bloods, an ultrasound scan and treatment. Her scan confirmed she was suffering from the condition ‘PYOMETRA’. Maddie was hospitalized and put on fluids overnight ready for surgery the following morning.
Day Two - Maddie goes for surgery
Pyometra is an infection of the uterus and the best treatment is for life saving surgery. After an examination she was prepared for a general anaesthetic, given antibiotics and pain relief. Surgery was successful and a ovario hysterectomy was performed. Maddie's uterus weighed 9lbs, 15% of her bodyweight.
The day following surgery Maddie was noticeably brighter and happier, even a tail wag. Clearly she was making a good recovery so she was able to go home.
The total cost for her treatment and hospital stay was over £500.
This condition is easily prevented by neutering bitches at an early age, reducing the risks of surgery greatly. Please ask a member of staff about neutering and NEW Laparscopic Neutering.
