Limb Sparing for Osteosarcoma

Canine Osteosarcoma is a painful malignant primary bone tumour. Due to discomfort associated with the tumour, amputation of the limb is often performed to make dogs more comfortable. This treatment is often combined with chemotherapy. An alternative treatment option is 'limb sparing' surgery where the bone tumour is resected and replaced with a bone graft from another dog. A long plate is used to attach the bone graft to the limb radius, ulna and foot. This surgery, if successful, allows the dog to function on the limb without the discomfort of the primary tumour. Custom implants are designed and made on a case by case basis for this surgery.
