Hydrotherapy Service at Langford
Langford Clinical Veterinary Services not only host a veterinary referral hospital, small animal practice and large animal and equine facilities, but also offers hydrotherapy services to pets from all around Somerset and beyond.
The ‘Primrose Trust Hydrotherapy Unit’ which is based at the Langford Vet School, opened its doors for business in February 2007. It consists of a Modular Pool, Water Walker Treadmill, Hot Spa and overhead hoist. The unit is situated adjacent the Small Animal Practice and has easy access for client parking. It has the capacity to offer a wide range of therapies to internal and external clients.
The hydrotherapy unit is staffed by a fully qualified registered veterinary nurse holding a qualification in hydrotherapy, as well as being a Veterinary Health Advisor. Furthermore, the hydrotherapy unit has the back up of Veterinary Specialists in orthopaedics and other disciplines when required.
Some of the many services offered by the hydrotherapy unit include rehabilitation sessions after major surgery, adjunct treatment for dogs with osteoarthritis or other debilitating diseases and weight loss programmes.
The type of hydrotherapy used is dependant on the condition being treated, for example the Hot Spa has in-built agitator jets and is used for relief of pain and muscle spasms, whereas the Water Walker is a partially submerged treadmill which offers different potential benefits to those of the pool or spa. For patients with poor balance or weakness the water treadmill provides an environment that stimulates sensory awareness and muscular strengthening.

The hydrotherapy unit will continue to provide all of the above treatment options, but it also aims to expand services to include various other treatment modalities in the near future.
The University of Bristol Primrose Trust Hydrotherapy Unit at Langford is the newest centre to open in the area. Our building has been internally redesigned to offer a full range of hydrotherapy treatments using the Hot Spa, Water Walker and Jet Pool. Appointments for treatment sessions are booked through the Small Animal Practice and are carried out and supervised by qualified veterinary nurses and hydrotherapist’s.
