PCR testing for vector–transmitted infection
The Acarus laboratory specialises in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for organisms transmitted by arthropod vectors (insects, ticks etc) including those that affect animals that have travelled into the UK from overseas destinations. Samples submitted to the Acarus laboratory are processed to extract DNA and then screened for the presence of gene sequences that are specific for the organism or organism group that is being investigated.

Recommended tests
Babesia + Ehrlichia + Leishmania is recommended particularly for animals that have travelled to or have resided in countries bordering the Mediterranean, central and Eastern Europe. Previously Screen 1.
Anaplasma phagocytophilum + Borrelia is suitable for animals that have not travelled outside of the UK and also for animals that have travelled to or have resided in Northern Europe (Scandinavia/Ireland). Previously Screen 2.
We would be happy to discuss the most suitable tests particularly regarding animals travelling to particular regions, including beyond Europe.
